Greensboro has a new City Council Member. Justin Outling is an attorney who also serves on Greensboro's Minimum Housing Standards Commission. Outling will replace Zack Matheny, who stepped down from his District 3 seat after four terms.
The News and Record reports the council voted 7-2 Tuesday to appoint Outling. He'll be the second-youngest council member, at just 32.
His appointment also brings the number of black council members to four — the most ever to serve on the City Council at one time.
Matheny resigned his seat to pursue a position as the chief executive officer of the Downtown Greensboro Inc., a nonprofit group that works to promote downtown businesses. Since the group is funded by the city, Matheny stepped down to avoid a conflict of interest by voting on next year's budget.
Outling will finish Matheny's term, which ends this year. He says he plans to run for the position in the November election.
