Lewisville Sees Potential For Beautification in Bridge Replacement

A bridge over US 421 in Lewisville will be getting a makeover to create a more appealing entrance to the western Forsyth County town.

The Williams Road Bridge was struck by a truck last year. State highway officials at first said the bridge could be repaired but later determined that at more than 60 years old it would be better to replace it.

Lewisville Mayor Dan Pugh says the new bridge will have a more boulevard-like appearance, including lighting, a brick sidewalk and decorative rails. The improvements could cost the town more than $200,000. Pugh says the new bridge will help create a gateway to Lewisville's downtown and could help spur development.

“It will be something that we think that the town will be proud of," he says. "It will put our town in a position where people will judge it from an appearance standpoint, and we thing that is enough, really and truly.”

Construction is expected to start in late spring and take about four months. The roadwork will close US 421 at the Williams Road Bridge.

The highway is a major thoroughfare between the Triad and other counties in Northwest North Carolina. Pugh says traffic will be diverted onto the exit ramps and then back onto the highway during construction.
