This week, advertisements for diamond rings, romantic dinners and crimson roses will fill television and computer screens. Valentine's Day is this Thursday.

But guest commentator Susan Ladd peers beyond these commercial trappings. And in this segment of Real People, Real Stories she realizes, for some couples, falling in love can spark deep social divisions. Ladd and her husband, Herb, live in Greensboro and are raising two daughters, an 11-year-old and a 14-year-old. She is also a reporter and a columnist for the Greensboro News & Record.
