Schools in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County will be the recipients of one of the largest grants ever awarded by the Winston-Salem Foundation.  The group is committing $2 million to support a professional development initiative in the school district.

Foundation president Scott Wierman presented the plan to the Board of Education Tuesday night. The Winston-Salem Journal reports the partnership with the foundation was approved unanimously.

The Peer Project will be launched this summer.  The idea is to promote professional development opportunities to support the district's three major goals: closing the achievement gap , raising the graduation rate and having most third-graders reading on grade level by 2020.

A five-year timeline for the grant mirrors that of the goals.

The Peer Project is tied for the second largest grant ever given by the foundation to support a single initiative.
