Bill Addresses Voter ID Law Restrictions

A bill that moved quickly toward the General Assembly could loosen restrictions on North Carolina's voter identification law.

Legislation dropped quickly on the General Assembly by Republican leaders and approved would allow some North Carolina residents to legally vote in person even without photo identification.

The House and Senate on Thursday separately voted for the elections legislation by wide margins, although Democrats complained about the parliamentary process that moved the bill to the floor.

The bill heading to Gov. Pat McCrory's desk says voters who suffered a "reasonable impediment" to getting a qualified ID - such as illness, a busy work schedule or lack of transportation - could fill out a form.

NC Florist Hailed For Helping Catch Man Accused Of Charleston Shooting

A North Carolina florist is being hailed for her help catching the man accused of shooting and killing nine people inside a black church in Charleston.

Debbie Dills had been on her way to work Thursday morning in Kings Mountain when she saw a familiar black Hyundai next to her at a stoplight. She recognized the driver as the suspect she had seen on the news. Dills followed the car and got a license plate number. Her boss called police, resulting in the suspect's arrest.

W.Va., Va. Coalition Takes A Stand Against Natural Gas Pipeline

Environmental and conservation groups in West Virginia and Virginia are taking a stand against the proposed route of a 550-mile natural gas pipeline.

The announcement Thursday by the Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance comes nine months after it was formed to address concerns about the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.

The alliance cited possible threats to water supplies, the sensitive mountain terrain the pipeline would traverse and potential damage to habitat.

Dominion said it will continue to work to build a pipeline with the least impact to the environment.

NC Officials: Anglers Shouldn't Lure Sharks To Swim Areas

North Carolina officials are urging anglers to voluntarily avoid shark fishing when people are swimming nearby as the town where two young beachgoers were almost killed is weighing a ban.

The state Division of Marine Fisheries on Thursday asked people fishing from piers and beaches not to lure sharks to their hooks by tossing fish chunks into surf areas.

The coastal town of Oak Island is considering whether it can stop shark fishing after two young people lost limbs in separate shark attacks within 90 minutes of each other on Sunday.

Guilford County Reduces Property Taxes In New Budget

Guilford County residents will pay less in property taxes next year under the spending plan passed Thursday by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.

The News and Record reports the budget was approved 5-4 along party lines. It decreases the tax rate by a penny.

It's a small decrease, said Commissioner Jeff Phillips, but represents a move in the right direction that helps chip away at a series of property tax hikes that occurred in the eight years before many of the current commissioners came on the board.
