NC Lawmakers Have Work To Do On Stop-Gap Spending Plan

North Carolina lawmakers are less than a week away from a new fiscal year and they don't agree fully how state government should operate during expected prolonged budget and tax negotiations.

The House and Senate adjourned Thursday for the weekend without a stop-gap spending measure, although Republican leaders on both sides indicate they're close. The government's new year begins Wednesday.

Packaging Requirements For E-Cigarette Liquid In NC Approved

North Carolina legislators have agreed to put more regulations on the rapidly growing electronic cigarette industry, particularly child-resistant packaging on containers of nicotine-laced liquid from which its vapors are inhaled.

The House gave final legislative approval Thursday to a Senate bill, approved unanimously by both chambers and heading to Gov. Pat McCrory's desk.

City Asks For Residents' Help To Find Extent of Methane Plume

Winston-Salem officials are trying to find the boundaries of a methane gas plume in the area near Bowman Gray Stadium. They met with residents Thursday, asking for their permission to take samples inside their homes and on their properties.

Assistant City manager Greg Turner says high levels have been found in the stadium's parking lot, but so far not inside the homes nearby.

Experts Share Best Practices For Dealing With Shark Attacks

Beach towns nationwide are evaluating how best to keep beachgoers safe after a recent string of shark attacks off the North Carolina coast.

In the past two weeks, four people in the state have been bitten by sharks, but officials have been reluctant to close beaches and warn swimmers.

U.S. Lifesaving Association Chairman Chris Brewster said the decision to close beaches or issue warnings often comes down to the sharks' behavior.

North Carolina Experiencing Drought For 1st Time In 2 Years

Officials at the State Climate Office at N.C. State University say North Carolina is in the throes of a drought for the first time in at least two years.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the climate office says that for the past month, many sites across the state are an inch or more below what they normally get this time of year.

Climatologist Rebecca Cumbie says on the office's website that in the western Piedmont, several sites are 2 inches or more below normal for the past month.
