North Carolina Justices Take Another Look At 2011 Redistricting
A U.S. Supreme Court ruling has brought foes over how North Carolina congressional and General Assembly boundaries were drawn back to North Carolina's highest court.
The state's justices were scheduled to hear arguments Monday in redistricting lawsuits filed nearly four years ago by Democratic voters and civil rights and election advocacy groups. There's no timetable for a ruling.
The maps drawn by Republicans at the legislature were upheld by a three-judge panel, followed by a majority on the state Supreme Court last December. But the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in April a second look was needed after a separate Alabama redistricting decision.
Mortgage Handling Complaints Persist For NC Consumers
Complaints against mortgage companies continue to stream in from financial consumers in North Carolina nine years after the start of the U.S. housing crisis.
The Charlotte Observer reports that problems with mortgage lenders and servicers have been the top customer complaint reported to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau since the regulator began collecting them in 2011.
Caucus Presidents Asks For Retrial
Some members of the North Carolina Democratic Party wants Attorney General Roy Cooper to retry a white police officer for the shooting death of unarmed black man Jonathan Ferrell, saying there's no certainty that jurors would deadlock again.
Party African-American Caucus President Willie Fleming urged Cooper to reconsider Friday evening, hours after Cooper's office announced the decision to dismiss a voluntary manslaughter charge against Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Randall Kerrick.
Fleming says Charlotte residents deserve the respect of prosecutors to seek a verdict of guilty or innocence, rather than last week's mistrial
Democrats Choose Former House Member To Replace Glazier
Democratic leaders in Cumberland County have selected former North Carolina Rep. Billy Richardson to replace a resigning House member.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that executive committee members of the local Democratic Party voted for Richardson on Saturday. He will replace state Rep. Rick Glazier, who announced his resignation in June.
By law, the governor must approve the party's selection and appoint Richardson to the Fayetteville seat.
