Vigil In Winston-Salem Honors Victims Of Charleston Shooting
A vigil was held in Winston-Salem on Sunday in response to the shooting of nine black church members by a 21-year-old white man last Wednesday in Charleston, S.C.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports the vigil was put together on short notice by the Ministers Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity, and drew well over 100 people to Emmanuel Baptist Church.
The Rev. John Mendez condemned what he called American “gun mania”.
According to the paper, when those taking part were asked to hold hands in prayer with their neighbors, there were many black and white hands clasped together in the church pews.
Richardson Gives $100,000 To Families Of Charleston Shooting
Jerry Richardson, the owner of the NFL's Carolina Panthers, has donated $100,000 to the families of the Charleston shooting to help cover burial costs of the victims.
Richardson sent a letter to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund dated Friday along with a check for $100,000.
Richardson asks in the letter that $10,000 go to each of the nine families of the victims and $10,000 for a memorial at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church honoring the memory of those killed in the shooting on Wednesday.
NC Congressman's Tree Falls, Kills Passing Postal Worker
A postal worker is dead after her passing vehicle was crushed by a falling tree owned by a North Carolina congressman.
Multiple media organizations reported the 43-year-old female mail carrier died Saturday when the large tree fell on her U.S. Postal Service vehicle. Lincoln County sheriff's deputies identified her as Lisa Rudisill Wilkerson of Sherrill's Ford.
The tree was at the home of U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry in the town of Denver.
McHenry press secretary Jeff Butler said Sunday the North Carolina Republican was visiting out-of-state relatives on Saturday.
Free Summer Meals To Be Offered At Forsyth County Schools
Children in Forsyth County will have access to free breakfast and lunch again this summer.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports summer meals will be served at 18 schools throughout the county.
All 18 locations will serve both breakfast and lunch Monday-Thursday though Aug. 13. Students can sign up to receive take-home food to cover Friday's meals, when the school district is closed.
Former UNC-Chapel Hill Head William B. Aycock Dies At 99
The leader who headed North Carolina's flagship university through a law banning Communists from speaking on campus and a basketball scandal is dead.
William Brantley Aycock was chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1957 to 1964. His daughter Nancy Aycock said Sunday he died on Saturday from complications after a fall that resulted in fractured ribs. He was 99 years old.
