Negotiations Next Step For NC Medicaid, Incentives Bills

The North Carolina House is formally rejecting the Senate versions of two key measures that legislative leaders want finalized before adjourning this year.

The House voted unanimously Wednesday against the Senate's proposed state Medicaid system overhaul. The chamber followed later with near-unanimous rejection of an economic incentives bill that also contains a retooled formula to distribute more local sales taxes to rural counties.

The two chambers would next appoint negotiators to work out differences on competing House and Senate proposals.

McCrory Signs Bills On Police Personal Data, Builders' Taxes

Pat McCrory has signed into law legislation that includes preventing disclosure of some personal data about police and giving home builders local tax breaks on unsold properties.

McCrory's office said Wednesday he signed 10 more bills into law.

One stops local governments from releasing emergency contact information and other details that might identify a law enforcement officer's home. Mobile phone numbers of government-issued phones for police, fire and rescue personnel are no longer considered public records. McCrory says the change provides additional security for first-responders and their families.

Another measure means home builders avoid having to pay property taxes for up to three years based on the value of newly constructed homes on land they own. Only the land's pre-construction value would be subject to tax.

The Federal Aviation Administration says a small panel door fell from an American Airlines Airbus 321 and landed on a North Carolina golf course.

The airline said no one was hurt when the panel fell from the plane, which carried six crew members and 146 passengers.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said a golfer reported the 15-by-15-inch part fell about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday onto the Green Meadows Golf Course in Mount Holly. Bergen says the part came off American Airlines Flight 1910 flying from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Seventy-eight-year-old Danny Lotz died Wednesday. That's according to Rex Hospital, which issued a statement for the Lotz family. The retired dentist was taken off life support two days after he was admitted to the hospital.
