VA To Review Status Of Marines Affected By Tainted Water
The Department of Veterans Affairs says it will begin reviewing the disability status of Marines who developed cancers and other conditions due to exposure to chemicals that contaminated the water at Camp Lejeune for more than 30 years.
An announcement from the VA on Monday said the move is in addition to the health care it provides for more than a dozen conditions to eligible veterans who were stationed at the North Carolina base for at least 30 days between August 1953 and December 1987.
BB&T Acquires Susquehanna Bank
BB&T Corp. has completed its largest acquisition ever with its purchase of Pennsylvania-based Susquehanna Bank. The $2.5 billion cash-and-stock deal for Susquehanna Bancshares Inc. is BB&T's first major push into the Northeast.
Winston-Salem based BB&T says the merger will provide long-term benefits for its shareholders.
The deal brings the total number of BB&T financial centers to more than 21-hundred, a number that's been boosted this year by the bank's purchase of Citibank branches in Texas----as well as its purchase of Bank of Kentucky.
NC House Makes Alternative Bond, Road-Building Offer
North Carolina House Republicans are trying to kick start negotiations with the Senate over proposed bonds that Gov. Pat McCrory wants before voters soon.
House Speaker Tim Moore and other chamber leaders unveiled late Monday an alternative plan to McCrory's $2.9 billion in debt offering split between transportation and government infrastructure projects.
The House is proposing the same debt amount, but all but $400 million would go to infrastructure. And $500 million would be earmarked for school construction — a new idea.
NC 'ABLE' Program To Help People With Disabilities Approved
North Carolina legislators have agreed the state should participate in a new federal program that allows for tax-advantaged financial accounts to help people with disabilities pay for services they need.
The House voted Monday night to accept Senate changes to the bill creating the ABLE — or Achieving a Better Life Experience — Trust Fund, with fund investments overseen by state leaders and appointees. The measure now goes to Gov. Pat McCrory's desk.
Openly Carried Weapons Banned From Cumberland County Land
Cumberland County officials have voted to prohibit people from openly carrying weapons on county property.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that the county Board of Commissioners approved the law Monday by a 6-1 vote, with Commissioner Jimmy Keefe opposing.
Keefe says he wanted to delay the matter for 60 days so county staff members could clarify which recreational areas are exempt from the law.
