Camp Lejeune Marine Treated For Shark Bite Off NC Coast
Medical personnel at Camp Lejeune say a Marine was bitten by a shark off the North Carolina coast last weekend, the eighth such attack in the last three weeks.
Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital spokesman Raymond Applewhite told WITN-TV the 32-year-old Marine was bitten offshore at Surf City on July 4. Base spokesman Nat Fahy said Monday that the Marine suffered lacerations to his right hand and forearm.
Prior to the latest attack, North Carolina had already set a record for the most shark bites off the state's coast in the 80 years in which records have been kept.
NAACP To Hold Events Leading Up To Voter ID Trial
The N.C. NAACP will hold several events this week in Winston-Salem, in advance of a trial focusing on the state's voter ID law.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports the week's events will end with a march and rally on next Monday through the city's downtown. July 13 is slated to be the first day of a trial in U.S. District Court in Winston-Salem about the constitutionality of the state's voter ID law.
The NAACP and other plaintiffs are challenging the law, arguing that it violates the 14th and 15th amendments and the Voting Rights Act. Gov. Pat McCrory and the State Board of Elections are the defendants.
New Economic Advocacy Group Formed In High Point
Two of High Point's economic development groups will merge to create Business High Point.
The News and Record reports The High Point Chamber of Commerce will merge with High Point Partners to create the group.
The Chamber said in a news release that Business High Point's mission is to “be the voice for the private sector” to “transform High Point into the single most livable, safe and prosperous community in America.”
Wake Forest University Speeding Toward Fundraising Goal
A fundraising campaign at Wake Forest University is quickly reaching its goal.
The school says in a statement that, as of June 30, Wake Will: The Campaign for Wake Forest has raised more than $503 million of its $600 million goal for the Reynolda Campus. That's 83 percent of the total, and it's come two years earlier than projected.

NC Highway Patrol Reports 10 Killed Over July 4 Holiday
The N.C. Highway Patrol says at least 10 people were killed on the state's roads during the July 4 holiday weekend.
The holiday period began at 6 p.m. last Friday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
Two of the deaths occurred in Rockingham County north of Reidsville.
Last year, the patrol reported seven people were killed in accidents during the July 4th holiday period.
