Minimum Wage To Go Up For Greensboro City Workers
The Greensboro City Council has adopted a plan that would boost pay for full-time city workers to $15-an-hour.
The Council voted 7-2 to develop a final policy that will increase the minimum wage rates to $10.00 an hour for part-time city employees and $12.00 an hour for full-time city employees.
The council's goal is to raise wages for city workers to a minimum of $15.00 an hour by the year 2020.
Advocates say raising the wage to $15 an hour will bring wages in line with the actual cost of living. The increase would be the first of it's kind in the South.
Yadkin County Hires Health Facility Consultants
Yadkin County is moving closer to regaining a hospital. The Board of Commissioners announced Tuesday that two consulting firms have been hired to help them make the best health choices for the county.
The county has signed a contract with Spectrum Health Partners from Tennessee which will look at a number of financial models for Yadkin County's healthcare. They're also working with Criterion Healthcare from Concord to review the current facility and talk with the community about the entire process.
The county has been without a hospital since May. CAH Acquisition had a lease to run Yadkin Hospital through July, but shut it down three months ago without notice.
Attorneys Want North Carolina Voter ID Litigation Resolved
A judge kept North Carolina's voter identification law out of last month's federal trial scrutinizing other election changes by the legislature. Now attorneys who sued over the law and lawyers for the state want resolution on voter ID.
Lawyers this week filed memos with U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder about the photo ID requirement for in-person ballots in 2016. The legislature eased the mandate in June to allow more people to vote without qualifying IDs.
The state's attorneys say voter ID portions of the lawsuits should be dismissed because of the updated law and an appeals court ruling involving Texas' law. But the plaintiffs say voter ID is still an undue voting burden and would lead to discrimination. They plan to pitch a proposed settlement agreement to the state soon.
New NC Law Lets Guard Members Have Concealed Carry On Duty
A bill allowing some North Carolina National Guard members to carry concealed handguns while on duty is now law.
Gov. Pat McCrory signed the measure Tuesday at a ceremony at National Guard headquarters in Raleigh. The provision was added to legislation that also creates a new legal action for people injured by terrorists.
The concealed weapons provision lets the state's adjutant general designate National Guard members with concealed weapons permits the ability to carry them in state buildings, such as recruiting offices.
Confederate Statue At UNC Vandalized With Spray Paint Again
A statue memorializing Confederate soldiers has been spray painted with graffiti again on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Multiple media outlets reported Tuesday that someone spray painted "Who is Sandra Bland?" on the base of the statue overnight. The statue was also vandalized in July.
Bland was a black woman who died in a Texas jail after a contentious arrest by a white state trooper. Authorities ruled the death a suicide.
UNC spokesman Jim Gregory issued a statement saying the vandalism was unfortunate and was the opposite of open discussion.
