North Carolina environmental regulators are ordering Duke Energy to stop the spread of groundwater pollution from coal ash dumps outside Wilmington after tests showed contamination in nearby drinking wells. Officials with the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources say recent tests showed high levels of boron in three wells near the Sutton Steam Plant.

A measure that would allow those in the country illegally to gain limited driving privileges appears headed for a vote in the state House. The bill creating a "restricted ID" for undocumented residents in North Carolina cleared the House Finance Committee yesterday 22-11.
Bear That May Have Attacked Teen Euthanized
A bear that may be the one that attacked a teenager at Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been euthanized, and DNA samples from the animal have been sent for testing.
A park spokeswoman says rangers found the bear at the campsite where the 16-year-old was attacked Saturday night and captured it yesterday morning.
