A new kneeling soldier statue is now on display at the Veteran's Memorial in King Central Park. An earlier statue was removed from the park as part of a lawsuit settlement agreement over whether the display promoted Christianity on city property.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports the new statue was placed at the park Wednesday afternoon. The statue shows the silhouette of a soldier kneeling by a rifle with a helmet on top in tribute to a fallen soldier.

The former statue showed a soldier kneeling before a cross. The city council declared that statue as surplus last week. It plans to donate it to American Legion Post 290 in King and will consider a resolution to that effect on Monday.

The Christian flag is also barred from the memorial under the settlement.

Some residents in King are still sad that the old statue was removed and plan to hold a rally next week.

One organizer said the rally is being held to promote awareness of what happened in King.

The rally will be held. Feb. 7 at the Central Park amphitheater.
