The seven-month search for UNC Greensboro's next leader is expected to conclude this week, bringing to a close a year of controversy.

Late last month a search committee whittled the list of about 20 candidates for chancellor down to three finalists. Their names have not been released. The final selection is expected to be announced Friday during a UNC system board of governors meeting.

The decision will cap what has been an unusually chaotic year for the school. It began with the firing of three longtime university relations employees in August amid accusations they co-mingled university work with a private business.

The firings caused an uproar on campus, leading to criticism of Chancellor Linda Brady. She announced in October that she would retire at the end of June. But heart surgery in March interrupted those plans. Provost Dana Dunn has been acting chancellor since then.

The next chancellor is expected to take office July 1.
