Construction on the first section of Winston-Salem's Northern Beltway could start next month. The $154 million contract for these four miles of pavement was awarded to a New York firm.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation funded the contract through the Urban Loop Acceleration Plan. This section of the eastern part of the beltway between U.S. 158 and U.S. 421/Business 40 should be open to traffic by November 2018.
Eventually, the beltway will provide a 34-mile multi-lane freeway around the northern side of Winston-Salem. The rest of the eastern section of the Beltway will connect U.S. 311 southeast of the city to U.S. 52, and then become part of the I-74 corridor. The western section will continue around to U.S. 158 on the southwestern side of the city.
The beltway is designed to reduce traffic congestion and provide people who live there better access to their jobs and educational opportunities outside of their communities.
