Service by North Carolina Passenger Trains Postponed by Fallen Trees and Power Lines, as well as Crossing Power Outages

Raleigh--Due to the significant number of trees and power lines still down on the railroad tracks between Greensboro and Durham as a result of Friday's winter storm, Amtrak and NCDOT will be unable to operate the Carolinian and Piedmont passenger trains on Saturday, March 8th.

In addition to the issue with downed trees and power lines, there are also 20 at-grade crossings that do not have power to operate the crossing protection devices.  That requires all trains to stop prior to the crossing and the train crew must then flag the train across the crossing.  Norfolk Southern does not believe the railroad between Greensboro and Durham will be restored for passenger service until late today.

Train 79, the southbound Carolinian, will operate on its normal schedule between New York City and Raleigh. When service going west of Raleigh resumes will depend on when repairs are completed, and power is restored to the 20 grade crossings. An update on train 79 will be issued later today.

No alternate transportation service is being offered for the postponed trains. All other Amtrak national system trains that do not operate between Greensboro and Durham are operating on their normal schedules.

CSXT freight service in North Carolina has returned to normal, as has Norfolk Southern freight service with the exception of between Greensboro and Durham.  Norfolk Southern expects freight service to return to normal on Sunday
