There have been seven murder cases this month alone. Greensboro police officers say three arrests have been made as well as other efforts to protect the community.
On the afternoon of September 1, Labor Day, the first of several murders occurred in Greensboro. By September 25, there have been seven. Interim Police Chief Anita Holder says while this sounds like an alarming number, it has happened before. “In 2011, we had seven homicides during the month of July.”
Holder says while the numbers are surprising, she doesn't think it points to a larger trend.
“It sounds sensational when we say there have been 7 deaths in a one month period," says Holder. "It's not so unusual as to change our course of action.”
According to Holder, these murders are not related and assures that Greensboro is still safe.
“In general the people who are murdered fall into a couple of classifications. [In cases of] domestic violence and where drug sales are involved, there's an increased risk of being murdered whether in Greensboro or any other city in this country,” says Holder.
Greensboro police are pulling officers in from other departments to help with the investigations. They've arrested and charged multiple suspects in connection to this month's first three murder cases.
Last year in September, there was one murder in Greensboro.
