A Jonesville man is dead after exchanging gunfire with law officers during a standoff. The confrontation also wounded a Wilkes County sheriff's deputy.

James Barrett exchanged shots with deputies responding to a domestic dispute involving Barrett on Monday morning in Ronda. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that 60-year-old Barrett was shot, then fled into nearby woods before being caught. He later died.

The unidentified deputy who was shot was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for treatment. One other person has also been taken to a hospital for gunshot wounds.

Authorities also believe Barrett set a house on fire before fleeing.
