Shareholders of Greensboro-based chip maker RF Micro Devices agreed Friday to a merger.
The company is buying TriQuint Semiconductor through a deal announced in February. Oregon-based TriQuint shareholders are also expected to vote on the deal later today in Oregon.
The approval is the next step in a deal that would create one of the largest tech companies of its kind – both RF Micro and TriQuint create components for mobile devices.
The merged company would have a new name that has not been disclosed. Also unanswered is whether the combined company will be headquartered in North Carolina or Oregon. RF Micro has about 1,400 Greensboro employees.
An RF Micro spokesman says the deal must still make its way through the regulatory process before those questions can be answered. Government officials in China will also have to agree to the deal, as both companies have operations there as well.
The deal is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
