Getting rid of unwanted stuff at the landfill won't cost Rockingham County residents anything this week.
In Rockingham County this week, residents can dump trash into the county's landfill for free. Martie Neugent is the supervisor. He says this event helps to reduce illegal road-side dumping. “You can bring household trash or yard waste but no grass clippings. You can bring batteries, tires, electronics, scrap metal," explains Neugent. People are allowed to dump up to 25 tires. "But we don't take liquids, hazardous waste or paint.” Neugent also cautions people to separate all metal items from paper trash before bringing it to the landfill. In addition, electronics should be in their own pile.
The landfill is at 281 Shuff Road in Madison and covers 85 acres. According to Neugent, there's plenty of room for county residents because right now only 35 acres is being used. The landfill is open during the week from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and on Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.
