A bill that would restructure Greensboro city government had a hearing at a senate committee meeting Thursday. Senate Bill 36, introduced by Republican Senator Trudy Wade, would redraw council districts in the city and change the role of the mayor. Supporters of the bill say it would better represent residents.
Former mayor Bill Knight says the legislation would improve the city. He said that Greensboro has been influenced under the current system. He added that there's been a concentration of power that has not changed a lot over the years.
Current mayor Nancy Vaughan has said that she strongly opposes the bill. She was not able to attend the hearing but said in a letter that it was a local bill without local support.
Greensboro resident Willie Taylor also said she was concerned about the legality of the measure.
"To my knowledge, there is not a city in North Carolina who has been redistricted and their government composition changed as this bill would do for Greensboro," says Taylor.
The Senate committee took no action at Thursday meeting. A vote is expected next Tuesday.
