North Carolina residents prepare for another round of snow and ice.

The National Weather Service says there is a large snow system moving into our state. Meteorologist Kris Matta describes what residents in the Triad should expect. “Light snow is getting close to the area or has already started. The snow will pick up in intensity through the morning and begin accumulating around lunch time," says Matta. "Total expected snow accumulation for the Triad is 6-10 inches.”

North Carolina Department of Transportation road crews will clear major highways and primary roads first and then scrape secondary roads. John Rhyne is the Division 9 maintenance engineer and oversees crews in Forsyth, Davie, Davidson, Rowan and Stokes counties. He says there is a slight difference in how roads are treated. “We do not apply salt on the secondary roads because we don't have the money to buy that much salt and we don't have the capacity to store that much salt," explains Rhyne. "So we make many passes on those secondary roads until we get them clean or until Mother Nature melts it.” According to Rhyne, his crews manage about 5,000 miles of roads. He says his division has about 9,000 tons of salt, enough to ensure the primary roads across five counties stay clean and safe this winter.
