Tourism is big business in both the region and the Tar Heel state.

The Piedmont Triad's tourism industry generated more than $2.5 billion in expenditures in 2012. That includes everything from the nearly three quarters of a million people who come to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro each year, to professional cycling events held in Winston-Salem and High Point, to the numerous festivals held around the region.

Overall, there are 23,500 jobs tied to tourism and the industry generated almost $195 million in local and state taxes. The Triad Business Journal is taking a look at the tourism industry for its Fourth of July edition. WFDD's Keri Brown recently sat down with The Triad Business Journal's Catherine Carlock to talk about the growing industry and its impact on the local economy.
