An escaped inmate was captured Monday after attempting to break into cars on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. The incident happened ahead of the first day of classes of the fall semester.

North Carolina Public Safety Department spokesman Keith Acree said in a statement that 28-year-old Brandon Brim escaped from the Forsyth Correctional Center around 10:00 p.m. Sunday.

Acree said Brim was found by campus police officers around 2:00 a.m. Monday as he was trying to break into vehicles.

Acree said Brim was a minimum-security inmate who was serving a sentence of about seven years for habitual breaking and entering.

Wake Forest University has not released a statement.

UPDATE (12:41 p.m.): Wake Forest University Police Chief Regina Lawson released a statement Monday afternoon with additional information on the incident.

Lawson says both a student and a university security officer spotted Brim around the same time Monday morning and notified campus police.

Officers captured him near the university's Polo Road entrance and turned him over to Winston-Salem police after determining he was an escapee.

Lawson called the incident “a good example of our community working together to address a security matter.”

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that classes start at Wake Forest University Monday, when in fact, they begin Tuesday.
