The U.S. Supreme Court has ordered the 4th Circuit Court reconsider its decision on North Carolina license plates. The lower court will discuss again the balance they tried to strike on “Choose Life” license plates.
The circuit court ruled that North Carolina cannot issue license plates with the anti-abortion slogan "Choose Life" without issuing ones that have a message supporting abortion rights.
The justices decided Monday to send the North Carolina case back to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals after the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 last week that Texas was OK to issue Confederate battle flag plates.
In the Texas ruling, the justices said plates are government speech and don't have to offer both sides of the debate. The appeals court ruled North Carolina had to offer both plates.
North Carolina lawmakers voted to offer "Choose Life" plates in 2011. The American Civil Liberties Union sued. It says this decision could allow states to discriminate.
