The Wake Forest University campus will be closed tomorrow until about 2 p.m. for the memorial service for Dr. Maya Angelou.
Angelou, a world-renowned poet, author and activist, died at her Winston-Salem home last week. Winston-Salem police are warning that roads surrounding the campus could get congested due to the high level of traffic and security for the service. First Lady Michelle Obama is among those scheduled to speak.
Kevin Cox, director of community relations for Wake Forest, says university officials have worked closely with Angelou's family to put together a service befitting of her life. He says it is an honor for Wake Forest to hold the service at Wait Chapel. He says Angelou loved the University very much, and the feeling was mutual.
The service for Dr. Angelou is private and only those with event passes will be allowed on campus Saturday morning. Winston-Salem police recommend that people who typically use the roads around the campus to pick an alternate route.
