Winston-Salem is getting its first park dedicated to the arts. This will mean a major expansion for the downtown arts district.

The non-profit group Art for Art's Sake is spearheading the creation of an art-themed public park, which will be called ARTivity on the Green.

The park will be located between the Downtown Arts District and Wake Forest University's Innovation Quarter.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the project will cost about $2 million and is expected to be completed by May 2015.

AFAS Chairman Harry Knabb says the project will be paid for by a grant from the Thomas J. Regan Jr. Foundation.

Knabb says the park will double the size of the arts district, and help encourage more development.

The space will include a performance space as well as a concrete mural canvas for local artists.
