The U.S. Senate has confirmed a Winston-Salem attorney to a federal judgeship in central North Carolina.
President Obama's nomination of Loretta Biggs was approved in a voice vote. The confirmation Tuesday evening means she'll be a U.S. District Court judge in the Middle District of North Carolina, and will fill the seat vacated by James Beaty, who moved to senior status.
Biggs previously served as a state District Court judge and on the state Court of Appeals.
The state chapter of the NAACP identifies Biggs as the first black woman to serve as a lifetime appointed federal judge in North Carolina. The NAACP also wants the Senate to confirm Jennifer May-Parker, a longtime black nominee of the president, to a North Carolina Eastern District judgeship.
