This winter's stormy weather has put a dent in North Carolina's transportation budget. The money set aside for snow and ice removal is almost gone.
North Carolina has a $40 million dollar kitty for winter road maintenance. But state Department of Transportation Secretary Tony Tata says that cup is running dry.
According to the Triad Business Journal, Tata says that after the latest storm, the state will have spent an estimated $35 million.
He says the state does have a maintenance reserve from the highway fund that can be used on an emergency basis. Last winter, North Carolina spent $70 million on snow- and ice-removal work.
Tata made his remarks during an in-person pep talk he gave to maintenance crews just before the latest storm's arrival on Wednesday.
Gov. Pat McCrory had earlier declared a state of emergency, his second such declaration in two weeks.
