A great variety show this week, starting off with some powerful songs and tunes from the old-time and bluegrass evolution. Then we have an appreciation of the late Algia Mae Hinton, one of the last true old-time North Carolina blueswomen, songsters, and dancers. We dug into the Across the Blue Ridge archives and found an Algia Mae concert recording from 1999 that was never broadcast because soon after the concert, ATBR host Paul Brown left for NPR in Washington, and our show went off the air for seventeen years. You'll love hearing Algia Mae Hinton at her best. Finally, our intern, Shohei Tsutsumi, heads to the Appalachian State University fiddlers' convention, one of the first of the season each year. We hear some music, an interview, and a little of the history of fiddlers' conventions in the south as part of our Blue Ridge Music Trails series.
