Across The Blue Ridge # 17 - The South Carolina Broadcasters

The first broadcast from an Across the Blue Ridge Muddy Creek Opry show features an exciting trio breathing new life into some great old songs and tunes – and creating new music as well.  The South Carolina Broadcasters – David Sheppard, Ivy Sheppard and Andy Edmonds – have a gritty, unmistakable sound they call “primitive bluegrass”.  Their influences include The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers of Tennessee (from whom Ivy learned “everything”, she says in our interview; North Carolina fiddle master Benton Flippen (a mentor to Andy); and other greats from Flatt & Scruggs to Mississippi John Hurt. Our segment was produced from a live performance at Muddy Creek Music Hall in Winston-Salem, NC.  Also on this week's show: West Virginia master fiddler Bobby Taylor; banjo picker Mac Benford; Heather Berry and Tony Mabe; and The Piedmont Pals house band with host Paul Brown, Terri McMurray and Bob Carlin.
