Southern roots music is much more than today's typical bluegrass combination of banjo, fiddle, guitar, bass and mandolin. Piano is among the many instruments represented in the evolution of the region's music. On this week's show, host Paul Brown shares some historic recordings of string bands with piano. We hear Clarice Shelor of southwest Virginia with her family at the 1927 Bristol recording sessions in Tennessee – sessions that helped create and boost a market for mountain music 78RPM records. Also represented, modern string bands including the Shady Mountain Ramblers with pianist Gary Patton. Our featured performers are Jeff Little, Josh Scott and Steve Lewis – the Jeff Little Trio, which is taking keyboard music into an exciting new era while keeping tradition in the mix.
