This week, we kick off a series on North Carolina's Blue Ridge Music Trails. Listen for a story or segment at least once a month, with some shorter pieces in between. The music trails are an economic development, tourism and education resource developed by the North Carolina Arts Council with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Find out about them in our interview with North Carolina Arts Council Executive Director Wayne Martin, the man behind the original proposal for arts-based economic development initiatives that won the NEA's favor back in the 1990s. Along the way on this week's show, you'll hear some of the remarkable variety in North Carolina's traditional music, in a succession of historic recordings spanning old time fiddle tunes to gospel songs, bluegrass and ballad singing. Also part of the soundscape, some of the music heard today, pointing the way to the future.
