Downtown Winston-Salem’s Aperture Cinema will host its first in-house film festival next month. The indie movie theater will screen a trailer for the upcoming event later today.
Named Kino im Nord Karolina, or Cinema in North Carolina, the film festival will feature German-language films from Austria, Switzerland and Germany.
Lawren Desai is the executive director and curator of Aperture. She said the festival was first conceived as a way to feature films the theater doesn’t usually have enough screens or time to show.
From there, Desai said she and the Aperture team turned to the area’s roots for inspiration.
"There is a history of German settlement here in the Piedmont Triad and at the same time there are some amazing contemporary films coming out of Germany and why don’t we do that," Desai said. "Celebrate the legacy, the original settlers and also celebrate German cinema."
The trailer for the film festival will premiere at The Caviste in Winston-Salem Thursday at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
More information on the festival can be found on the Aperture Cinema website.
