Appalachian State Police responded to a report of a stabbing on Thursday around noon outside of Peacock Hall, according to an emergency alert from the university.

Two suspects — both App State students — were taken into custody, including 20-year-old Emmett Cardwell, from Durham.

He was arrested and charged with the felony crime of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury. The second suspect has been interviewed but has not been charged. App State Police's investigation is ongoing.

The victim is also a student at the university and was reportedly injured and transported to Watauga Medical Center for treatment.

According to App State Chief of Police Andy Stephenson, the incident was isolated and the victim and suspects know one another.

Students were notified of the crime and encouraged to avoid the area until after about an hour, when officials advised that there was no ongoing threat to campus safety.

The university provided drop-in counseling for students Friday afternoon.
