Breaking Down Barriers For Minority Students In Science And Medicine

When Linda Barry was in medical school, she was one of the few women and African Americans in her class. A 2011 study from the National Institute of Health revealed a large deficit in funding for minority students in science compared with whites.

Dr. Barry wanted to change that, and with Dr. Cato Laurencin, she helped create the Young Innovative Investigator Program to bridge the gap for minorities pursuing graduate level education in science and medicine. She tells Here & Now’s Peter O’Dowd about the challenges for minorities seeking to study medicine and how her program seeks to address these disparities.
