The city of Greensboro recently announced plans to demolish the Bellemeade Street parking deck.

The city found some structural issues due to the materials used when the site was first built in 1989. Officials secured the upper levels to ensure its safety.

Strategic and Crisis Communication Manager Eric Chilton says the facility is still currently safe to park in, but long-term it's more cost-effective to close it rather than commit to repairs.

"It would be one of those things where it would cost a good bit of money to keep putting Band-Aids on things, and after a while, it's not worth it to even have that open," he says.

Chilton says drivers with passes for the deck should find an alternative by Feb. 15. Nearby city-owned sites include the Eugene Street, Church Street and February One parking decks.

Chilton says pass-holders who go to another city-owned parking facility are eligible for a 50% discount that will be in effect for six months.
