City of High Point employee pleads guilty to federal weapons charge

An employee for the City of High Point has been convicted on federal weapons charges.

WGHP reports Tiyon Jermelle Weaver, of Greensboro, has pleaded guilty to unlawfully dealing in firearms. He has been employed by High Point since 2000, most recently as the city’s parks and recreation safety coordinator. 

Investigators found Weaver had purchased over 155 firearms since 2017. Twenty-seven of his guns were later connected to crimes including one murder. None had been reported as stolen. 

A federal agent confronted Weaver with evidence of the illegal sales in October of 2023.

“I hate those crimes were committed with something that I purchased,” Weaver wrote in an email to the agent. “It has opened my eyes to what can happen when firearms get into the wrong hands. I can definitely say I won’t be selling anything else.”

A guilty plea to unlawfully dealing in firearms could mean imprisonment of no more than five years, a fine of no more than $250,000 or both. Sentencing is set for Aug. 21.

Weaver is currently out on bond.
