The state's early voting season is only a few days old but already some problems have come to light. And one of the hot spots is the college campus.
There were long lines at Appalachian State University on the first day of early voting. The Watauga Democrat reported that there was a high turnout, which included many voters taking part in same-day registration.
Appalachian State wasn't the only campus with problems. Bob Hall is executive director of Democracy North Carolina, which runs a hotline for voters having problems at the polls. He says there's a disproportionate amount of calls from students, including those without a proper photo ID.
“There are a number of out-of-state students who don't have a North Carolina driver's license, their passport is in Georgia or Connecticut, and they're wondering what they can use," he says. "We're helping them understand that even if you don't have an ID you can vote in this election.”
North Carolina voters without a photo ID will be allowed to vote through a provisional ballot if they explain via affidavit why they weren't able to get one.
Early voting wraps up Saturday, and voting day for the primary is March 15.
