Cone Health president and CEO Dr. Mary Jo Cagle is stepping down from her role at the end of May.

Cagle is the first woman and first physician to serve as CEO at Cone Health. During her tenure, she navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, and also oversaw the health system becoming part of Risant Health.

Last week, Cagle was named one of Modern Healthcare’s Leading Women of 2025. According to a press release, she is stepping down “due to a serious family health matter.”

Bernard Sherry, who’s served as Cone Health’s interim chief operating officer since December 2024, will serve as interim CEO beginning June 1. The health system has started a nationwide search for its next leader.
