Curtain Fire Will Cost UNC Greensboro More Than Expected

Repairing the damage from a recent fire at UNCG's auditorium will cost more than expected.

The venue, formerly called Aycock Auditorium, has been dark since April, when a hot light torched part of the stage curtain.

After inspection, state and local officials determined cleanup and restoration will cost $1.4 million.

That's higher than UNCG leaders anticipated.

More than half that money will go toward cleanup, which the university says has been more complex than expected. The rest will go toward new curtains, rigging and lighting systems.

The good news for students is that state insurance will pay for the restoration. A university spokesperson told the News and Record that tuition rates will not be affected.

The auditorium should be fully operational in August.
