DeJoy Company Contributions Under Scrutiny

State Attorney General Josh Stein released a statement over the weekend about campaign finance laws in North Carolina shortly after news articles raised questions about Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's fundraising efforts.

DeJoy is a Greensboro businessman and longtime GOP fundraiser who was appointed to the postmaster position earlier this year.

The Washington Post reports that former employees of his company were pressured to donate to Republican candidates. They were then reimbursed for doing so through bonuses, according to a former executive quoted by the paper.

Stein's statement quoted a headline from the story. He then goes on to say that it is illegal to directly or indirectly reimburse a political contribution.

Stein said he wouldn't comment on any specific case, but that any such credible accusation would warrant an investigation by state and federal authorities.

Democrats in Washington also called for an investigation. DeJoy's had an embattled tenure that has included protests outside of his home.

Last month, DeJoy was asked during congressional testimony if he had ever repaid executives for donations. He denied that he ever did and said he resented being asked.
