The deadline for local governments, nonprofits and individuals affected by Helene to apply for federal aid has been extended to February 6.
According to multiple press releases from the state, former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper requested the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) receive applications past the January 6 deadline.
Public assistance grants will go mainly to local governments, houses of worship and eligible nonprofits. The money will go toward fixing or replacing public property like roads and bridges.
Individuals affected by Helene will also have until February 6 to apply for disaster assistance. Some of the fastest ways to apply for aid include visiting local disaster recovery centers or applying online at disasterassistance.gov.
A December report from the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management shows FEMA has given out close to $850 million in individual and public assistance grants since Helene.
In preparation for continued recovery efforts, Cooper requested an additional $25.6 billion in federal support. The state estimates Helene caused nearly $60 billion worth of damage in North Carolina.
