Greensboro City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem Yvonne Johnson has died. 

Johnson passed away Wednesday at the age of 82, according to a statement from Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan. Her cause of death was not disclosed. 

Johnson was elected to Greensboro’s Council in 2011, after serving as the city’s first Black mayor from 2007 to 2009.

Johnson graduated from Dudley High School and attended both Bennett College and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. In addition to her political service, she served on boards and held leadership positions at several nonprofits, including the Women’s Resource Center and the Greensboro Housing Coalition.

In her statement, Vaughan called Johnson “a pillar of this community.” 

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
