For the third year, Forsyth County is participating in Operation Green Light for Veterans, an initiative led by the National Association of Counties.
The Forsyth County Government Center, the Forsyth County Central Library and the Carolina Field of Honor at Triad Park will be illuminated green to raise awareness about issues returning service members face when they transition to civilian life.
According to the county's resolution approving the project, 44-72% of veterans experience high levels of stress during that transition. They’re also at a higher risk of suicide during their first year after service.
At a Board of Commissioners meeting on Thursday, Vice Chair Gloria Whisenhunt urged county residents to get involved in the campaign.
“Forsyth County encourages its citizens in patriotic tradition to recognize the importance of honoring all those who made immeasurable sacrifices to preserve freedom by displaying a green light in a window of their place of business or residence," she said.
Guilford and Davidson counties are also participating in the initiative.
