The Greensboro City Council on Tuesday accepted recommendations from a 2024 disparity study, which aims to improve the minority and women business enterprise program.

The effort comes as part of the city's policy to ensure all businesses are afforded an opportunity in the contracting process. Recommendations include targeted outreach and establishing a more effective non-discrimination policy.

Councilmember Sharon Hightower said staff and minority businesses working together to ensure a better program is crafted is important.

"Everybody needs to truly understand the impact that this has economically in our community," she said. "This is something that people rely on as they do business."

Hightower recommended creating a special committee to look at the program to see where changes could be implemented.

The council will further discuss the study's findings in a future work session.
