Greensboro City Council now has a vacant seat after a council member's immediate resignation.

Michelle Kennedy will no longer serve on Greensboro City Council. She resigned her post during a council meeting on Tuesday. It's unclear right now what prompted her abrupt departure.

Kennedy was elected as an At-Large Council Representative in 2017. Her term was set to expire in 2022.

Kennedy wasn't present during the virtual meeting but says it's been an honor to serve in this role. Mayor Nancy Vaughn read Kennedy's resignation letter to the city council.

“I am sorry to leave before the end of my term, however, I'm excited to be able to continue the work of building a better community for all Greensboro residents," Vaughan read. "I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to serve."

When contacted by WFDD, Kennedy responded with an additional statement: “I will continue in the future, as I have in the past, to advance issues of affordable housing and equity. I look forward to serving my community in whatever capacity I am needed.”

Kennedy is currently the executive director of the Interactive Resource Center (IRC), a nonprofit that works to end homelessness.

Council members will follow the city's charter to fill the vacant seat for the remainder of Kennedy's term.
