Greensboro's Planning and Zoning Commission is supporting a developer's annexation request for land that was formerly part of Summerfield.
The commission voted unanimously on Monday to recommend annexing nearly 80 acres into Greensboro and to apply city zoning to it despite opposition. The land is a portion of the nearly 1,000 acres removed from the town of Summerfield last year.
The move is the first step for developer David Couch's project called Christopher Village, which includes 268 dwelling units.
Commissioner Stu Nichols says he supports the plan because it balances creating a walkable community with providing housing in an area where it's desperately needed.
"I think that this development has the potential to become a model across the country for what good looks like," he says.
The annexation and zoning request is next scheduled to appear before the City Council at its meeting on March 18.
