Greensboro Urban Ministry takes new approach to winter sheltering with the help of local churches

Greensboro Urban Ministry has launched a collaborative program with local churches to offer winter shelter to those in need. The program will provide more than 150 beds.

The initiative marks a new approach to providing a dire resource and is set to run from December through March.

Greensboro Urban Ministry CEO Brian Hahne recently spoke with WFDD's DJ Simmons on the initiative and how it could pave the way for similar efforts in the future.

On the role the faith community has in assisting people without housing:

"Really it was a commitment on their parts to say, you know, this is good for the clients, this is good for the community. But frankly, I've had multiple church leaders say to me 'This is good for our congregation.' It's good for us to be exposed to this and to be a part of the solution in this community."

On the future of the initiative:

"This is building on something. If we need more beds next winter, we'll go find more beds in the faith community. ... You know I think the community is saying, listen, we want to be a part of the solution and if we can get behind Urban Ministry we'll do it."
